The museum opened in 1988 as an affiliated facility of Hallym University to collect and organize relics and folk artifacts from prehistoric and historical periods. Through preservation and exhibition, it provides opportunities for both university members and local residents to understand historical culture. Additionally, it contributes to the study of Korean history through investigation and research of cultural properties.
The museum includes Exhibition Room 1 (Archaeological History Room), the Exhibition Room 2 (Folklore·Crafts Room), Outdoor Exhibition Hall, etc. Approximately 1,700 pieces of pottery/earthenware and ancient calligraphy, and approximately 3,000 nationally owned relics excavated in Gangwon-do and nearby areas are stored and managed in the collection.
Representative exhibition items include relics from the prehistoric to historical periods excavated by the museum from the Chuncheon Sinmae-ri, Cheonjeon-ri, Yangju Daemosanseong, and Ganghwa Oegyujanggak sites, as well as ancient pottery pieces from Baekje, Silla, Gaya, porcelain from the Goryeo Dynasty, and folk art such as masterpieces and drawers from the Joseon Dynasty.
Our museum is endeavoring to become a museum accessible for faculty and students of our university and local residents who are interested in history through permanent exhibitions and academic lectures. Also, the museum is fulfilling its role as a central organization in charge of research to develop Gangwon local culture and protect cultural assets in the Gangwon region through cultural property surveys in Gangwon-do and nearby areas.
