Gangwon-do, which is the site of Hallym University, can have a leading role to build the “East Sea Economic Zone” and an academic center connecting the Far East Siberian region of Russia and Gangwon-do is required in that perspective. While common Russian institutes in Korea focus on “central” regions such as Moscow, the Institute of Russian Studies aims to maximize preoccupying effect by focusing on research of the Far East Siberian region and build a research base that can compete with universities in metropolitan areas. -
Institute of Thanatology
Life disregarding trends such as rapidly increasing suicide, euthanasia, and abortion is spreading in our society nowadays. Moreover, most people unfortunately end their lives covered in fear and anxiety. The Institute of Thanatology is conducting various activities such as the “Forum for Preparation of Bright Death” to create a more desirable death culture facing the low birth rate and aging society.

Institute of Humanities
The Institute of Humanities has been established in 1983 to vitalize humanities, which are currently facing an academic crisis, through interdisciplinary research and comparative studies between regional cultures forming a new academic position for humanities through exchanges with other studies. The previous academic journal “Humanities Research” is being regularly published, and an annual symposium is taking place since 1999.

The Hallym Institute of Archaeology conducts ground surveys and excavation projects on cultural properties in the Gangwon area, and aims to develop into a core institute that can specialize in the archaeological research in the Gangwon area. The institute is playing a central role in research related to the cultural properties in the Gangwon area linked with the museum on campus.

Groundbreaking development and expansion of digital technology is a great challenge requiring changes in humanities, and can also become an opportunity for humanities to expand into all sectors of the society. Digital technology requires humanistic imagination and creativity, and humanities must be open for infinite possibilities of digital technologies. The Digital Humanities Collaboratory not only offers a humanistic reflection on the information and communication revolution, but also seeks to explore new paths for the humanities to make groundbreaking progress across all areas of research and education through creative engagement with digital technologies.

Center for Children's Literature and English Education
The Center for Children's Literature and English Education has been established in 2014 with the purpose of researching theories and methods required for effective literature and English education utilizing children's literature. The center opens seminars and special lectures twice a year to provide a forum for active discussion on research for children's literature. The center engages in various activities to promote children's literature. These include supporting educational volunteer programs at daycare centers and elementary schools in Chuncheon, and sponsoring the outstanding student club project, Hallym English Fairy Tale Land, as part of the Hallym University LINC (Leaders in INdustry-university Cooperation) initiative.

The Convergence Cultural Contents Research Lab builds a convergence type expert training venue with future-couture research and humanities-arts-science-engineering mind by creating the atmosphere of interdisciplinary convergence. The research lab aims to contribute to the development of exchange and collaboration between studies by providing opportunities to understand and utilize convergence culture contents generated through research.
